“A Guide to the Ancient Mosaics of Serdica” by Associate Professor Vania Popova is the first publication that summarizes all available evidence for the partially or fully preserved floor mosaics excavated in the Roman and Late Antique buildings of ancient Serdica, now modern Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. This book is also the final monograph of the author, published posthumously, and includes analyses and observations drawn from her extensive research on ancient mosaics in Bulgaria that began in the 1970s. The collaboration between the Balkan Heritage Foundation team and Vania Popova began in 2021 and continued until her untimely death in 2024. An incomplete version of the text for the current edition was provided to the editorial team weeks before the author's passing. For this reason, editorial interventions were necessary in the main text, appendices, and illustrations. The monograph is primarily based on published information about mosaics uncovered during rescue excavations in the territory of ancient Serdica in the 20th and 21st centuries. The publication is made possible with the support of the Sofia Culture Program.
